Application Example: Four gripper tunnel boring machines are used to transport over 24,000,000 tons of excavated material from the depths of the Alps for the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. With two tubes each 57 km long, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is the longest tunnel in the world after its completion in 2017. The machines are designed for hard rock and have very impressive drilling capacities. Gripper cylinders are used here to support the torque of the drill head, which has a diameter of 9.5 m. The cylinders generate a thrust of 18,000 kN during operation.

Gotthard-Tunnel, Switzerland

Since the end of the construction phase and the Gotthard Base Tunnel’s opening in 2016 the tunnel, with two 57 km bores, is the world’s longest tunnel. To complete the tunnelling, enormous boring machines had to burrow through different rock types.

For the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, four gripper tunnel boring machines shifted more than 24 million t of spoil from deep inside the Alps. Montanhydraulik manufactured various hydraulic cylinders for these machines, including drive cylinders, gripper cylinders, movement cylinders, and draw cylinders to pull the trailer.
